Singapore Flyer

Yay. Went on the flyer on Wednesday. Too tired to blog about it now though. Was promo price for students 10bucks only! =P

Camera was cui so ended up with either too bright or too dark photos since we took the flyer at night. Haha. So the photos attached here are mostly taken randomly while waiting for the bus. Wahaha

Super sleeeeepy! Nights =)

Random

I've been hanging out alot for the past few days! Haha. Finally a break today! :)

Finally finished my main project at my intern on Saturday! *phew* Hopefully won't be so busy with miscellaneous stuff anymore for the remaining one week! =) We're starting to go fancy restaurant dining with the colleagues! Haha. Yay. Finally internship is ending after like 2 months! It wasn't always sweet, but at least i've learnt alot.....especially about PEOPLE. PEOPLE in general, not just just the kids who come in and out of the clinic everyday. Oh well. Let's leave it at that about how unique PEOPLE can be! =]

Went out with deardear & co. on Saturday night! If you haven't seen Illuma @ Bugis level 4 before, perhaps you would like to check it out - Ebisboshi Shotengai; it's like this whole hugeeeee area of fancy Japanese restaurants that looks kind of whoaaaa~ And our dear friend checked the reviews and chose one: Tsubohachi - and we queued for like uber long (16 of us!), with hordes of other people. And the poor neighbouring restaurant has like zero queue! =X When we finally got 4x4pax tables, and landed food in our mouths, I gladly declare that it's the worst Japanese restaurant i've eaten at! O_O Ok, I feel so extremely cheated by the looks and the price! And I think the Cha Soba served in plastic containers I ate at Sakae Buffet tasted much better than this!! Eeeeeeeeek! Never ever going back again.

So, disgruntled, we went off to Bedok Simpang in search of supper! Hahaha. Dear and his xiaomei and I arrived later than the rest and shared a Roti John.. Well, we ordered prata too, but the person seemed to forgot about it, and so we never got to eat them. Plus we were quite full already, so decided not to remind the person! hahaha. The rest ate lots of other things though like chicken wings, rice, mee goreng blahblah. Haha. Well, i think it's nicer than wasting my money at te horrible restaurant! O_O

Hahahaa

And I met gungun yesterday!! Woooot. Like finally, huh. Haha. It was nice and lame crap as usual. Ate jap food again (zzz), but it was at the new Paradiz Centre (duno what's the new name called?). Kind of like a food court, which sells only jap food. Heh. I have to insist again, that it's not that fantastic, but at least better than Tsubohachi! =X

Oh ya, forgot to mention. I saw the weirdest thing on Friday night. Deardear and I were strolling along Katong as usual after a full meal of Astons, when we walked past this rather special coffee shop, where everybody was seated around the usual chairs and tables, except durian shells were on the tables, and they were all eating nothing but durians. Well. That wasn't the weird thing. I caught sight of this girl, sparring the durian from the shell with her fork. Erm, ok. So I continued walking and guess what I saw!? This woman scooping the durian up from the shell with a soup spoon in her left hand, and a pair of chopsticks in her right hand, ready to giap the durian!! Wahhhhhhh. BTH!! I just walked on until some distance away, and started laughing my head off. Omg lah! I can't believe it mannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn !!!!! O_O

Hahahaha. Hahahaha. HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! =D

I try not to be rude, but I honestly prefer the more authentic way of eating durians with my hands. *ahems*

Alrightey. Going off!! :) Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee~~~

Be thankful for the things we take for granted.

On Monday, I sat in for an assessment done by a pediatrician and a physiotherapist. And I think it may have just changed my life forever.

The patient came seeking for a more accurate diagnosis for their child. They were an overseas client from a not very developed country, but were relatively well-to-do. So they came into our clinic as their country doesn't provide the appropriate services they were seeking.

While the doctor talked to the parents, I played with the child. I can't say she built a rapport with me immediately, nor did she took notice of all the toys I was dnagling in front of her. Most of the time she stared blankly at the sounds the toys made and looked like she wanted to play. When I took her hands and placed them on the toy, she finally turned and looked at me, and smiled blankly. And the physiotherapist and I just went gaga at the blank smile. And then, she just kept giving that blank smile on and off after that. It may or may not be a heartfelt smile coming from her, but it always twisted something in me to see her smile.

There were clearly many problems with her, which for the confidentiality issues, I can't elaborate here. But after the consultation was over, and the doctor and I were alone, I asked her what the problem was. And she told me she suspected it to be a genetic problem, which in summary, caused delays in almost everything from speech to IQ. She had to see a genticist to confirm it anyway. And so I asked casually "If it's confirmed to be the blahblahblah syndrome, will she eventually be able to talk?" and the doctor replied me just as casually "no" while continuing to scribble her notes.

That "no" left me haunted for days.

The family was only supposed to be in Singapore for a week anyway. The child was arranged to see the geneticist the next day, and came back for other therapies every day up til Thursday, where it was the closing session before they returned to their home on Saturday. Everyday I saw her, I went up to her happily and called her. She continued to give that blank melting smile, which haunted me even more. I chatted with the mummy after their closing session on Thursday, about stuff like where they were bringing her to play before returning home on Saturday, etc... And that was the last I saw of them, and the blank melting smile.

I never asked the mummy nor the doctor about the diagnosis eventually. It would likely be what the doctor suspected, but I never wanted to find out; it had already left me thinking about it for days anyway.

I always thought reading the developmental psych textbook created an immense awareness in me about the too many many birth defects possible. And I told myself at that point of time, the birth of a healthy baby is simply a miracle enough already.

Indeed, my fellow internmate said more than once "Working here makes you scared of having your own baby." After thinking about that blank melting smile for days and days, I realised to me, it was more about being thankful if I ever have my own dozen of miraculously healthy babies.

And if I ever go into clinical practice one day, I hope I don't talk like the clinicians I talk to everyday. It's scary to become immune like that...
